Description
A 2019 compilation of gravity data for Australia and its continental margins, derived from approximately 1.8 million observations. The dataset combines ground, offshore, and airborne gravity measurements collected from the 1940s onward by government, industry, and research bodies. It includes a processed tilt image of de-trended global isostatic residual anomalies, generated from the 2019 Australian National Gravity Grids B series.
Use Cases
Model subsurface geological structures based on gravity anomaly data.
Detect edges of geological units using the tilt filter applied to the DGIR grid.
Interpret the density of rocks beneath the Earth's surface using processed gravity measurements.
Supplement ground-based gravity surveys with airborne gravity and gradiometry data for improved resolution.
Strengths
Integrates nearly 1.4 million ground gravity stations with 345,000 line km of airborne gravity and 106,000 line km of airborne gravity gradiometry data.
Data quality is checked by GA geophysicists to ensure it is fit-for-purpose.
Grid has a cell size of 0.00417 degrees (approximately 435m), providing a specific spatial resolution.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Provenance
Source
Australian Ocean Data Network, incorporating data from the Australian National Gravity Database and global sources.
Collection Method
Processed from ground observations, offshore global gravity data, and airborne surveys using standard geophysical methods and FFT processing.
Time Range
1940s to 2019.
