Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute developed a Native Cover indicator for Alberta. The dataset tracks aquatic and wetland native cover (AWNC) and terrestrial native cover (TNC) across Hydrological Unit Code 8 watersheds for the years 2010, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021. Calculations use ABMI's Wetland and Human Footprint Inventories and Alberta government's DEM-derived riparian data and watershed boundaries.
Use Cases
- Monitor watershed health based on aquatic and wetland native cover (AWNC) metrics.
- Analyze land-use pressure based on terrestrial native cover (TNC) calculations.
- Track recovery of forest harvest areas based on the indicator's accounting method.
- Assess regional biodiversity based on human footprint-free habitat data.
- Model hydrological impacts based on riparian and wetland inventory data.
Strengths
- Data covers five specific years: 2010, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.
- Calculations account for recovery of forest harvest areas.
- Indicator is jointly developed by Alberta Environment and Protected Areas and the Alberta Biodiversity Monitoring Institute.
- Analysis is performed for all Hydrological Unit Code 8 watersheds in Alberta.
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
- Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to open_canada.
