Injury mortality data for the United States begins in 1999, classifying deaths by intent and mechanism. Records are based on all resident death certificates from the 50 states and District of Columbia, with age-adjusted rates calculated per 100,000 population. The dataset is produced by the National Center for Health Statistics using the National Vital Statistics System.
Age-adjusted death rates are based on the 2000 U.S. standard population. Populations for computing rates are postcensal estimates, which are revised and may differ from previously published rates.
