A research project from 2011-2014 developed spatially explicit land-use scenarios for the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area coastal zone up to the year 2035. The project, associated with the Australian Ocean Data Network, compiled spatial data on coastal ecosystems and socio-economic characteristics and used GIS-based land-use change modeling. It integrated governance analysis and a conservation planning approach to identify spatial priorities for protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems.
