Description
2022-2023 data from the NESP Marine and Coastal Hub project focused on mapping temperate continental shelf seabed habitats, particularly rocky reefs. The project, led by IMAS and UWA, collated existing seafloor data and deployed drop cameras to validate habitats, generating ecosystem models for the South-west and South-east Marine Parks Networks. Outcomes aim to support marine park management, spatial planning, and ocean accounting frameworks.
Use Cases
Identifying and monitoring rocky reef habitats based on collated seafloor data and new survey data.
Assessing management effectiveness for Australian Marine Parks based on modeled ecosystem classes.
Supporting marine spatial planning initiatives based on broad-scale habitat maps.
Informing ecosystem-based fisheries management based on knowledge of seabed habitat extent and type.
Contributing to ocean accounting frameworks based on modeled data products for reef and soft sediments.
Strengths
Project involved collaboration with Indigenous Rangers and organizations to incorporate cultural knowledge.
Data workflows were developed to enable rapid update of mapping products and ensure consistency.
Project built on previous research from the NESP Marine Biodiversity Hub, suggesting a continuity of methodology.
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
