Description
A 2024-2026 project by CSIRO, JCU, and the University of Melbourne updated national stocktakes and compiled evidence for coastal and marine nature repair in Australia. It produced a draft national framework and updated databases on restoration locations, habitat types, and intervention outcomes. The work supports coordinated planning for activities linked to blue carbon, biodiversity protection, and nature repair markets.
Use Cases
Identify restoration locations and intervention approaches based on updated national stocktakes.
Assess ecological and socio-economic risks for nature repair projects based on compiled evidence across multiple themes.
Guide future investment and site selection for blue carbon and biodiversity protection based on the scoped national framework.
Support Indigenous co-design and leadership in restoration projects based on engagement findings integrated into the framework.
Strengths
Project outputs include updates to two established national databases: the Australian Coastal Restoration Network and Living Shorelines Australia.
Evidence compilation covers seven distinct themes: ecological, engineering, environmental, legal/governance, socio-economic, Indigenous, and regional case studies.
Framework development involved engagement with a wide range of stakeholders including DCCEEW, state governments, non-profits, Indigenous communities, researchers, and practitioners.
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
