Description
A 2017-2018 review assessed the state of knowledge for EPBC-listed Threatened and Migratory marine species across Australia's North Marine Bioregion. The project, by the NESP Marine Biodiversity Hub, considered sharks, rays, shorebirds, turtles, dugongs, and cetaceans, alongside habitats, fisheries bycatch, and Indigenous priorities. Outputs identified key knowledge gaps and research priorities to guide future marine conservation and management across northern Australia.
Use Cases
Identifying conservation priority locations based on the review of species distributions and environmental pressures.
Planning future research initiatives based on the identified knowledge gaps for taxonomic groups like sharks, rays, and marine turtles.
Informing environmental management and EPBC referral activities using the compiled evidence on fisheries bycatch and Indigenous priorities.
Strengthening Indigenous participation in marine conservation by incorporating the reviewed Indigenous knowledge and management priorities.
Strengths
Project scope covers a defined geographic region from Torres Strait to the NT-WA border, extending to the edge of the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone.
Assessment considered multiple taxonomic groups and cross-cutting themes like habitats, bycatch, and Indigenous knowledge.
Outputs are intended to provide a strategic evidence base for research planning and conservation policy.
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
