Description
A 2026 project by the NESP Marine Biodiversity Hub aims to map and sample two unexplored submarine canyons in Western Australia's Gascoyne Marine Park. Planned outputs include an ROV image library, derived bathymetric products, taxonomic identifications, and genetic sequences. Data products will be archived with institutions like the Australian Marine Imagery Collection, Geoscience Australia, and the Atlas of Living Australia.
Use Cases
Analyze deep-sea biodiversity based on taxonomic identifications and associated metadata.
Study submarine canyon geomorphology based on derived bathymetric products and multibeam data.
Conduct genetic and environmental DNA (e-DNA) analysis based on Sanger and e-DNA sequences.
Perform habitat classification and visual analysis based on the ROV image library.
Strengths
Data will be archived and made available through multiple established national portals, including Geoscience Australia and the Atlas of Living Australia.
Project targets a significant information deficit in the deep waters of Western Australia's marine parks.
Employs multiple sampling platforms, including multibeam, ROV, and e-DNA.
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Provenance
Source
NESP Marine Biodiversity Hub project, via Australian Ocean Data Network.
Collection Method
Planned active mapping and sampling using multibeam, ROV, and e-DNA platforms.
