A 2015-2016 project from the Australian Ocean Data Network validates coral geochemical records as proxies for suspended sediment loads. The project compares trace element ratios from 2012 coral cores with measured sediment and nutrient loads from the Burdekin River. This work addresses a lack of replication for records widely cited as evidence of increased sediment delivery since the 1850s.
