A 2015-2016 scoping study designed a pilot nitrogen trading scheme for sugarcane catchments draining into the Great Barrier Reef Lagoon. The project synthesized nitrogen dynamics, local industry expertise, and lessons from other nutrient trading programs to estimate cost-effectiveness and financial impacts. This work was conducted under the Australian Ocean Data Network and last updated in July 2026.
