Description
NASA's New Horizons spacecraft captured raw images of Pluto, Kuiper Belt Objects, and planets during its cruise phase. The data includes functional tests, calibrations, and encounter rehearsals from Annual CheckOuts between 2007 and 2010. This Version 2.0 dataset from NASA has updated geometry and recalibrated images from the original release.
Use Cases
Calibrating spacecraft imaging instruments based on the described lamp and scattered light tests
Analyzing the morphology of distant Kuiper Belt Objects like Makemake and Haumea
Testing optical navigation (OpNav) algorithms using the described Pluto OpNav test observations
Studying instrument performance over time using the functional and 'Lite' tests from 2007-2010
Strengths
Data originates from a NASA planetary science mission, suggesting high provenance standards
Includes observations of multiple distinct target types: planets, KBOs, Centaurs, and star fields
Version 2.0 indicates reprocessing with updated geometry and resolution of review liens
Limitations
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
