Description
Fourteen distinct seismic facies were identified from 2D seismic data acquired in 2008-09, mapping the post-rift depositional history of Australia's Mentelle Basin. The dataset, hosted by the Australian Ocean Data Network, provides insights into sedimentary packages from the Valanginian to Campanian periods, constrained by stratigraphic wells DSDP 258 and DSDP 264. It characterizes features like channel fills, progradational wedges, and basin-fill facies across deep-water environments.
Use Cases
Modeling post-rift sedimentary basin evolution based on described seismic facies and stratal geometries.
Identifying potential hydrocarbon reservoirs based on channel fill and mounded facies characteristics.
Correlating regional stratigraphy using comparisons to age-equivalent units in the south Perth Basin.
Analyzing paleo-environmental changes from Valanginian to Campanian based on described facies transitions.
Strengths
Based on new 2D seismic data acquired in a dedicated 2008-09 survey by Geoscience Australia.
Provides age and lithological constraints from two stratigraphic wells (DSDP 258 and DSDP 264).
Identifies fourteen distinct seismic facies with detailed reflection characteristics.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data is presented in HTML format, which may require extraction for analysis.
