The Marine Environmental Data & Information Network provides counts and presence/absence records for macrofauna species from 40 grab samples. Data were collected between 16 February and 3 April 2013 at the Newquay And The Gannel Marine Conservation Zone. The survey was funded by the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
Use Cases
- Analyze species richness and diversity based on presence/absence data from grab samples.
- Model macrofauna community composition based on species counts from 40 samples.
- Assess the baseline ecological state of a Marine Conservation Zone for monitoring purposes.
- Study temporal changes in coastal benthic communities using a specific 2013 survey snapshot.
Strengths
- Data collection is precisely bounded to a specific 47-day period from 16 February to 3 April 2013.
- Samples are geolocated to a defined Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ).
- The dataset includes quantitative species counts and qualitative presence/absence records.
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale modeling.
