Description
Dekadal NDVI indicators for Nigeria's sub-national administrative units are derived from NASA MODIS collection 6.1 satellite imagery. Maintained by the World Food Programme, the data tracks vegetation health through 10-day indices, historical averages, and percentage anomalies.
Use Cases
Assessing crop stress by comparing vim (10-day NDVI) against vim_lta (long-term average)
Mapping drought severity across Nigeria using the viq (NDVI anomaly percentage) field
Evaluating the statistical reliability of regional aggregates using the n_pixels count
Strengths
Derived from NASA MODIS collection 6.1 (Aqua and Terra) high-resolution sensors
Includes n_pixels column to validate the data density and reliability of each regional aggregate
Standardized using WFP Pcode references for consistent administrative unit tracking
Limitations
Spatial resolution is limited to administrative unit aggregates rather than raw pixel data
Accuracy is dependent on cloud-free satellite observations during each 10-day window
Provenance
Source
World Food Programme (WFP) using NASA MODIS collection 6.1
Collection Method
Satellite remote sensing aggregation from MODIS Aqua and Terra sensors
Freshness
Updated through March 2026 per the source metadata.
Geography
Nigeria
Users require WFP administrative shapefiles to join with the Pcode references for geospatial visualization and mapping.
