Description
The NOAA-21 VIIRS Level-2 Regional Inherent Optical Properties (IOP) Data, version 2025.0, provides per-pixel measurements of how seawater absorbs and scatters light. It is produced by the OB_CLOUD organization using the Generalized Inherent Optical Properties (GIOP) model framework on satellite-derived Remote Sensing Reflectance (Rrs). The dataset includes geophysical variables such as total absorption and backscattering coefficients, supporting studies of marine biogeochemistry and water clarity.
Use Cases
Classifying water types based on retrieved inherent optical properties like absorption and backscattering coefficients.
Assessing water clarity and turbidity using the total backscattering coefficient (bb).
Conducting biogeochemical studies by analyzing phytoplankton absorption (aph_445) and CDOM/detritus absorption (adg_445).
Enabling forward and adjoint radiative-transfer modeling applications with IOP data.
Performing cross-sensor comparisons for ocean color data validation using IOPs, which are described as more robust than apparent optical properties.
Strengths
The dataset is derived from the NOAA-21 VIIRS satellite sensor, a specific and authoritative source for ocean color observations.
Includes multiple specific geophysical variables, such as absorption coefficients at 445 nm for phytoplankton (aph_445) and gelbstoff/detritus (adg_445).
Provides uncertainty estimates for key variables, including aph_unc_445 and bbp_unc_445, which support error analysis.
Uses the Generalized Inherent Optical Properties (GIOP) model framework, a recognized methodological approach for IOP retrieval.
Limitations
Row count, file size, and specific file formats are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale processing.
Column-level documentation beyond the listed geophysical variables is absent; field semantics for other potential columns must be inferred after download.
The last update date and temporal coverage are unknown, making data freshness unverified.
