Description
NASA's NPP Multi-Biome dataset provides net primary productivity estimates, vegetation characteristics, and summary climate data for 720 globally-distributed terrestrial sites. The data were synthesized from 858 scientific literature references published between 1869 and 1982, with most from the 1960s and 1970s. Each site is georeferenced and classified by biome, including cropland, desert, forest, grassland, savanna, tundra, and wetlands.
Use Cases
Modeling global carbon budgets based on site-specific above-ground and below-ground NPP estimates.
Analyzing biome-specific productivity ranges across climate zones using the georeferenced site data.
Validating Earth system models against historical, ground-truthed NPP observations.
Studying the relationship between climate variables and vegetation productivity across diverse terrestrial ecosystems.
Conducting meta-analyses of primary production literature using the provided bibliography of 858 references.
Strengths
Contains a globally-distributed set of 720 unique, georeferenced terrestrial sites.
Data is synthesized from a substantial bibliography of 858 original-source references.
Provides explicit value ranges for ANPP (1-8,530 g/m2/year), BNPP (0-5,828 g/m2/year), and total NPP (3-9,320 g/m2/year).
Includes detailed biome classification for sites across ten categories.
Limitations
Data is historical, with the underlying literature covering 1869-1982 and the dataset originally published in 1998.
Sources conflict on the 'last updated' date, with one platform showing 2026 (documentation only) and another 1981.
Column names and exact file sizes are not provided in the available metadata.
Provenance
Source
National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), synthesized from literature by Esser et al. (1997).
Collection Method
Extracted and synthesized from published scientific literature.
Time Range
1869 to 1982 (literature coverage); dataset records cover 1937-1981.
Freshness
2026-04-09 (documentation update); core data is from 1998 synthesis of pre 1982 literature.
Geography
Global terrestrial sites.
