Description
NSF COLDEX 2022 2023 Airborne Season (CXA1) Level 1 gravimeter instrument measurements are raw acceleration and gravity data from a GT-2A gravity meter, collected during flights over Antarctica. The dataset includes three ASCII file types (G, S, H) with 18 columns each, containing sensor readings, platform orientation, and flight parameters. The data was authored by Megan E. Kerr and last updated on the Texas Data Repository in October 2025.
Use Cases
Process raw gravity anomalies based on the detailed acceleration measurements in the G files.
Correct for aircraft motion and orientation using the 3-axis platform data in the S files.
Calibrate sensor readings using the correction parameters and reference gravity value provided in the H header files.
Combine with precise GPS trajectories (available separately) to remove aircraft accelerations and derive geophysical signals.
Strengths
Provides a detailed, absolute reference gravity value of 982316.4 mGal from a tie to the Thiel gravity monument at McMurdo Station.
Contains three distinct, structured file types (G, S, H) with 18 columns each, offering sensor data, platform state, and calibration parameters.
Includes pre- and post-flight reference measurements for each flight to aid in data processing.
Limitations
Data is not georeferenced; precise GPS trajectories from a separate source are required for meaningful analysis.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred from the provided description after download.
Row count, file formats, and dataset size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Provenance

Texas Data Repository Harvested Dataverse
Collection Method
Airborne measurements collected by a GT-2A gravity meter (SN018) during the NSF COLDEX 2022-2023 Antarctic airborne season.
Time Range
2022-2023
Freshness
Last updated 2025-10-15 06:32:55; freshness should be verified.
Geography
Antarctica, specifically flights originating from McMurdo Station.
License is unknown; users should verify terms before use. Data requires companion GNSS trajectory data from USAP-DC for georeferencing and processing.
