Description
A set of regional geological maps for the Central North Sea and Moray Firth areas of the UK Continental Shelf, published by the North Sea Transition Authority. The maps represent the first deliverables from a 3-year contract with Lloyd’s Register and include products like depth structure, isochore, and facies maps for main geological intervals. All released data is public domain, though the project benefited from third-party sources including the 21st Century Roadmap Palaeozoic project and data from PGS, the University of Aberdeen, CGG, and TGS.
Use Cases
Modeling subsurface reservoir distribution based on the described reservoir distribution maps.
Analyzing geological structure and history using the depth structure and structural elements maps.
Assessing hydrocarbon potential and source rock maturity from the hydrocarbon occurrence and source rock maps.
Planning well placement and evaluating penetration density with the well penetration maps.
Studying depositional environments and facies changes using the depositional facies maps.
Strengths
Includes nine distinct map types per geological time interval, such as depth structure and isochore maps.
Project benefited from multiple third-party data sources including a public domain Palaeozoic project and university research data.
Data is delivered as an ArcGIS project with web feature services for automatic updates of administrative data.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count and dataset size are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
