Description
January 2012 to November 2013 monitoring data from the St. Thomas East End Reserves (STEER) in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The dataset includes measurements of nitrate, ammonium, urea, orthophosphate, dissolved inorganic and organic nitrogen, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, bulk sediment deposition, sediment fractions, and total suspended solids. It was collected by the University of the Virgin Islands as part of an integrated assessment project for the STEER.
Use Cases
Analyzing nutrient pollution levels by examining nitrate, ammonium, urea, and orthophosphate concentrations.
Assessing sediment sources and deposition by studying terrigenous, organic, and carbonate sediment fractions.
Evaluating water clarity and potential impacts on coral reefs using total suspended solids (TSS) measurements.
Calculating nitrogen and phosphorus budgets for the reserve using total nitrogen and total phosphorus data.
Monitoring dissolved organic and inorganic nitrogen to understand nutrient cycling dynamics in the coastal zone.
Strengths
Provides a focused 22-month time series from January 2012 to November 2013 for temporal analysis.
Includes a specific suite of chemical and physical measurements relevant to coastal water quality assessment.
Data collection was conducted by a known academic institution, the University of the Virgin Islands.
Dataset is hosted on multiple authoritative platforms (NASA Earthdata, Data.gov), indicating validation and importance.
