Description
NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer collected oceanographic, meteorological, and navigation data across multiple marine protected areas in the Pacific Ocean between Pago Pago, American Samoa and Honolulu, Hawaii. The expedition, conducted from April 27 to May 19, 2017, utilized Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP), a Scientific Computer System (SCS), and satellite telepresence for real-time data transfer. Data was acquired by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) across American Samoa, the Cook Islands, Kiribati, Hawaii, and the Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument.
Use Cases
Analyzing current profiles and water column structure using Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data.
Studying sea surface temperature and salinity gradients from thermosalinograph measurements.
Correlating atmospheric conditions (wind, air temperature, pressure) with oceanographic states for climate research.
Mapping expedition tracks and sensor readings within specific marine protected area boundaries.
Investigating sound velocity profiles for applications in underwater acoustics and sonar operation.
Strengths
Data collection spans a specific 23-day expedition with a documented time range from 2017-04 27 to 2017-05-19.
Covers a wide geographic scope across multiple Pacific jurisdictions and marine protected areas.
Utilizes specialized shipboard systems including ADCP and a Scientific Computer System (SCS) for oceanographic applications.
Includes real-time telepresence capabilities for ship-to-shore data streaming and control.
Limitations
Critical metadata such as row count, file size, specific column names, and data license are unavailable across all platforms.
A significant conflict exists in the reported last updated date, with one source showing 2026-04-01 and another showing 2017-05-19.
Provenance
Source
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Department of Commerce.
Collection Method
Ship-based sensor acquisition during the EX1705 expedition on NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer.
