Description
3,750 oceanographic stations provide water temperature, salinity, oxygen, and transparency data, with 80% collected via CTD instruments. An additional 3,000 stations hold pollution measurements for nutrients, heavy metals, and hydrocarbons. SCIOPS compiled this data, with records spanning from 1972 to the present.
Use Cases
Modeling water temperature and salinity profiles from CTD instrument data across discrete depth levels.
Analyzing temporal trends in nutrient and heavy metal concentrations from pollution station samples.
Correlating cruise information, position, and date/time with oxygen levels and water transparency measurements.
Studying the spatial distribution of chlorinated hydrocarbons and radioactive pollution across the Aegean and Ionian Seas.
Strengths
Data from 3,750 oceanographic stations with detailed depth profiles.
Pollution records from approximately 3,000 additional stations.
Temporal coverage for some parameters extends over 50 years, starting from 1972.
Limitations
Sample size for specific pollutants like radioactive or ecotoxicological data is unspecified.
A portion of pollution data exists only in paper-based technical reports and scientific papers, limiting accessibility.
The exact row count and complete column schema are unknown.
Provenance
Source
SCIOPS
Collection Method
Data collected via multi-bottle Nansen casts, reversing thermometers, water samplers, STD/CTD instruments, and analyzed with Technicon Autoanalyzer, polarography, and gas chromatography.
Time Range
Oceanographic data from 1972; CTD-specific data since 1985. Pollution data from 1972; radioactive data since 1975; ecotoxicological data since 1983.
Geography
Aegean Sea (The Archipelago) and Ionian Sea.
A significant portion of the pollution and ecotoxicological data is archived in paper form within technical reports, requiring manual digitization.
