Description
A digital geospatial dataset shows the distribution of interpreted lithostratigraphic units in the shallow subsurface of large areas of the UK offshore. The data was originally published as paper maps between 1984 and 1992 by the British Geological Survey and has been digitized with added attribute information. It includes lithological descriptions, lexicon codes, and age ranges for formations, sourced from Stoker et al (2011).
Use Cases
Map subsurface Quaternary geology for offshore site assessments based on lithostratigraphic units.
Research formation characteristics and ages using the provided BGS lexicon codes and age data.
Support renewable energy development planning with regional geological context.
Analyze historical geological interpretations for academic or comparative studies.
Strengths
Covers large areas of the UK offshore at a standardized 1:250,000 scale.
Includes key attribute fields such as lithological descriptions, BGS lexicon codes, and formation age ranges.
Represents the first digital release of the original 1984-1992 paper map series.
Limitations
Data reflects geological understanding from its original publication (1984-1992) and may not include recent updates.
Description metadata is limited; actual data quality requires manual inspection after download.
Row count and file formats are unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
