Description
A multi-institutional 28-day marine survey conducted in September-October 1992 aboard the BMR vessel Rig Seismic on the NSW continental margin. The project collected baseline environmental data on sediment composition and distribution, with objectives related to anthropogenic materials, non-renewable resources, and climate change records. Personnel and funding involved the Sydney Water Board, Sydney University, the Geological Survey of New South Wales, and the Bureau of Mineral Resources.
Use Cases
Establishing environmental baselines for coastal zone monitoring based on sediment chemical composition data.
Investigating the record of Quaternary climate change based on sediment samples from the continental slope.
Characterizing non-renewable resource potential based on the analysis of offshore Sydney Basin rocks.
Assessing anthropogenic contamination based on geochemical studies of continental shelf sediments.
Studying ocean outfall and estuary exchange dynamics based on continuous geochemical tracer data.
Strengths
Data collection involved a 28-day dedicated marine survey with a multi-disciplinary team from several institutions.
The survey design targeted multiple specific objectives, including baseline environmental data, climate records, and resource assessment.
Project scope covers a defined geographic area on the NSW continental margin between Wollongong, Sydney, and Newcastle.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data is from a single survey in 1992; temporal coverage is limited.
