Description
1932-2014 global data on oil and natural gas production, prices, exports, and net exports. The dataset was compiled by Michael Mahdavi Ross at UCLA, with country codes standardized to Correlates of War and Quality of Government standards. Oil data spans 1932-2014, gas data from 1955-2014, and trade data from 1986-2013.
Use Cases
Modeling historical oil price volatility based on the long-term price series.
Analyzing the relationship between production and net exports for specific countries.
Studying the evolution of the global natural gas market since 1955 using production and price data.
Correlating energy production data with other socioeconomic indicators using standardized country codes.
Strengths
Provides over 80 years of oil production and price data (1932-2014).
Country codes are standardized to Correlates of War and Quality of Government standards, facilitating cross-dataset joins.
Covers multiple interrelated facets: production, prices, exports, and net exports.
Limitations
Data for 2014 is noted as incomplete for oil, and other series have different end dates.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
