Description
Six wavelengths (510, 600, 675, 745, 869, and 997 nm) provide aerosol extinction coefficients from the OMPS Limb-Profiler sensor on the Suomi-NPP satellite. This daily, global product measures stratospheric aerosol abundance from the ground up to about 80 km with a vertical resolution of approximately 1.8 km, replacing the previous single-wavelength product. Data is structured in HDF5 files, with about 14.5 orbits per day, each containing three limb profiles spaced roughly 250 km apart.
Use Cases
Tracking volcanic aerosol plume evolution based on multi-wavelength extinction profiles.
Validating atmospheric chemistry models using global, daily vertical profile data.
Studying stratospheric aerosol layer trends and composition from six distinct spectral bands.
Analyzing spatial correlations in aerosol distribution from the three cross-track limb profiles per orbit.
Strengths
Provides multi-spectral aerosol data at six specific wavelengths, offering more compositional detail than the previous single-wavelength product.
Delivers global spatial coverage (-90 to 90 degrees latitude) with a high vertical resolution of approximately 1.8 km.
Data is available from a major authoritative source (NASA GES DISC) and is present on multiple platforms, indicating established use.
Limitations
Column names and a detailed data dictionary are not provided in the available metadata, complicating direct analysis.
Key metadata such as row count, file size, and author are inconsistently reported or missing across sources.
The license is ambiguously listed as 'other-license-specified' without clear terms.
