Description
Experimental data from 5-6 replicate sediment cores per treatment, measuring dissolved oxygen fluxes in response to nutrient addition and low-nutrient water exchange. The study, part of NESP MaC 3.4 and conducted by Griffith University, expanded previous research to include estuaries in northern Australia such as Adelaide, Daly, Flinders, and Norman Rivers. Incubations were conducted over 2 days at 30°C under ambient light, with oxygen measured using Presens® fiber-optic sensors.
Use Cases
Modeling the relationship between nutrient availability and estuarine primary production based on oxygen flux measurements.
Comparing the effects of nutrient addition versus low-nutrient water exchange on mudflat sediment metabolism.
Substantiating previous findings on nutrient impacts in Gulf of Carpentaria and Northern Territory estuaries.
Assessing the potential impact of water extraction and catchment development on coastal ecosystems.
Strengths
Includes 5-6 replicate cores for each of three distinct experimental treatments.
Specifies precise nutrient addition concentrations (1.8 mg N L-1 ammonium, 0.25 µmol P L-1 phosphate).
Expands on prior research by including four estuary systems in northern Australia.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to the selected northern Australian estuaries.

Collection Method
Sediment cores were collected from mudflats, incubated with treatments (control, nutrient addition, low-nutrient water exchange), and oxygen fluxes were measured using Presens® fiber-optic sensors.
