278 students aged 18–24 from two California public universities completed a survey to develop a xerostomia (dry mouth) assessment tool for young adults. The resulting 5-item Young Adult version of the Shortened Xerostomia Inventory (SXI-Y) demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach alpha = 0.817) and strong correlation with a global dry mouth measure. Author Benjamin W. Chaffee published the factor loadings and item response coefficients on figshare in May 2026.
