Description
Over 4,000 dogs from Bulldogs, French Bulldogs, and Pugs were assessed using the Respiratory Function Grading Scheme (RFGS). The dataset, authored by Joanna Jadwiga Ilska and last updated in May 2026, contains heritability estimates for RFGS grade and nostril stenosis. It was used to evaluate the feasibility of selective breeding programs to improve respiratory health in these breeds.
Use Cases
Estimate heritability of respiratory function grades based on RFGS data.
Analyze genetic correlations between respiratory function and nostril stenosis traits.
Assess participation rates in health screening schemes across UK Kennel Club registered populations.
Model the potential impact of selective breeding on Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) prevalence.
Strengths
Data from over 4,000 dogs provides a substantial sample size for analysis.
Heritability estimates for key traits (RFGS grade: 0.21–0.49, nostril stenosis: 0.31–0.39) are provided.
Pedigree records are included, enabling genetic correlation studies.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The dataset is very small at 5.5 KB, indicating limited scope.
