Description
Sheela S. Sinharoy presents the ARISE scales, a set of 16 psychometric scales measuring women's empowerment in urban sanitation. The dataset contains cross-sectional survey data from 5,586 women across eight cities in Bangladesh, India, Senegal, Uganda, and Zambia, collected between August 2021 and June 2022. It was developed to provide reliable and valid measures for prioritizing, designing, and evaluating sanitation programs and policies.
Use Cases
Assessing the reliability and validity of empowerment scales based on the described psychometric evaluation methods.
Comparing sanitation-related empowerment constructs across different cultural and country settings based on the eight-city sample.
Informing the design of gender-sensitive sanitation interventions based on the measured sub-domains of empowerment.
Studying measurement invariance of social constructs over time based on the test-retest reliability analysis mentioned.
Strengths
Includes data from 5,586 respondents, providing a substantial sample size for psychometric analysis.
Covers eight distinct urban settings across Asia and Africa, allowing for cross-context comparison.
Scales were evaluated using multiple statistical methods for reliability and validity, as detailed in the description.
Data is shared under a permissive CC-BY-4.0 license.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for specific analytical needs.
The dataset is very small (9.5 KB), indicating it likely contains summary or scale results rather than raw survey responses.

Collection Method
Cross-sectional survey data collection as part of a multi-phased, theory-informed scale development project.
Time Range
Data collected between August 2021 and June 2022.
Freshness
Last updated 2026-06-02 17:34:39; freshness should be verified.
Geography
Eight cities: Meherpur and Saidpur (Bangladesh); Narsapur, Tiruchirappalli, and Warangal (India); Dakar (Senegal); Kampala (Uganda); Lusaka (Zambia).
Data is in XLS (Excel) format. The 9.5 KB size suggests it contains aggregated or summary results, not the full raw survey dataset.
