PACE OCI Level 3 Global Mapped Land Vegetation Indices Near Real-Time (NRT) Data

Ocean Biology DAAC produces near real-time (NRT) vegetation indices derived from surface reflectance. Six indices include NDVI, EVI, CIRE, PRI, CARI CCI. Data provides a snapshot during a short time period within a single orbit.

Use Cases

• Analyze vegetation health trends over time using NDVI/EVI time series
• Calibrate hyperspectral indices (CIRE/PRI/CAR/CCl) against field measurements
• Mask cloud-contaminated pixels using the L3M cloud mask product

Strengths

• Near real-time (NRT) data enables timely monitoring of vegetation dynamics
• Six complementary indices cover chlorophyll content (CIRE/CCl), carotenoids (CAR), anthocyanins (MARI), water stress (NDWI)
• Global coverage from PACE OCI sensor provides consistent daily observations

Limitations

• Data is masked for clouds but may retain residual atmospheric artifacts
• Product accuracy depends on ancillary meteorological/ozone inputs used in calibration
• Short time period per orbit may limit suitability for long-term trend analysis without aggregation
