Paraguay Subnational Rainfall: Dekadal CHIRPS Precipitation and Forecasts

Giving access to dekadal rainfall indicators for Paraguay's subnational administrative units, produced by the World Food Programme using CHIRPS v2 satellite imagery and CHIRPS-GEFS forecasts. It tracks 10-day, 1-month, and 3-month rainfall totals, long-term averages, and percentage anomalies across WFP-defined regions.

Use Cases

• Assessing immediate moisture stress for crops using the 10-day rainfall anomaly (rfq)
• Long-term climate trend analysis by comparing current 3-month rainfall (r3h) against the long-term average (r3h_avg)
• Early warning systems for flooding or drought using the CHIRPS-GEFS short-term forecasts in the type column

Strengths

• Provides 9 distinct rainfall indicators including rolling averages and anomalies
• Standardized using WFP Pcode references for administrative units
• Frequent update cycle transitioning from forecasts to final observations

Limitations

• Initial records are based on forecasts and preliminary observations which are later replaced by final products
• Satellite-derived CHIRPS data may deviate from local station-only measurements
