From April 20 to June 6, 1989, chemical and physical oceanographic data were collected from the R/V Atlantis II in the North Atlantic Ocean. The data include measurements of alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, partial pressure of carbon dioxide, nutrients, salinity, and temperature. These data were collected by P. Brewer of CSIRO and Catherine Goyet of the University of Perpignan as part of the CARINA synthesis project.
Use Cases
- Calibrating ocean carbon models based on discrete measurements of dissolved inorganic carbon and alkalinity.
- Studying spatial and temporal variability of the ocean carbon sink based on partial pressure of carbon dioxide data.
- Analyzing nutrient dynamics and their relationship to carbon chemistry based on nitrate, phosphate, and silicate measurements.
- Investigating water mass properties and mixing based on concurrent salinity and potential temperature profiles.
Strengths
- Data were collected as part of the international CARINA project, which aimed to produce a merged, internally consistent data set.
- Measurements cover multiple key carbon system and nutrient variables, including alkalinity, dissolved inorganic carbon, and partial pressure of CO2.
- The specific collection period is documented as April 20 to June 6, 1989.
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
- Last updated 1989-06-06 00:00:00; freshness should be verified.
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
