Description
NOAA's VOS Explorer of the Seas Lines 2004 dataset includes biological, chemical, meteorological, physical, and underway-surface data. The data were collected by Rik Wanninkhof of NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory from the EXPLORER OF THE SEAS in the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and North Atlantic Ocean between January 3, 2004, and January 2, 2005. Measurements include air temperature, barometric pressure, carbon dioxide levels, dissolved oxygen, fluorescence, salinity, sea surface temperature, wind direction, and wind speed.
Use Cases
Modeling ocean-atmosphere carbon dioxide flux based on partial pressure and sea surface temperature measurements.
Analyzing correlations between meteorological conditions and surface ocean chemistry based on wind speed, air temperature, and barometric pressure data.
Studying spatial and temporal variability in marine productivity based on fluorescence data.
Investigating salinity and temperature gradients in the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico.
Strengths
Data collection spans a full year from 2004-01-03 to 2005-01-02, providing seasonal coverage.
Includes multiple related variable types: biological, chemical, meteorological, physical, and underway-surface data.
Collected by a named principal investigator (Rik Wanninkhof) from a recognized NOAA laboratory (AOML).
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to the specific cruise track of the EXPLORER OF THE SEAS.
Provenance
Source
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Department of Commerce
Collection Method
Underway - surface observations using Barometric pressure sensor, Carbon dioxide (CO2) gas analyzer, Shower head chamber equilibrator, and thermosalinographs.
