Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and North Atlantic Ocean surface data collected from the EXPLORER OF THE SEAS vessel between March and December 2002. The dataset includes measurements of partial pressure of carbon dioxide, salinity, sea surface temperature, fluorescence, wind speed, and barometric pressure. These data were collected by Rik Wanninkhof of NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory as part of the VOS Explorer of the Seas Lines 2002 project.
Use Cases
- Modeling ocean carbon uptake based on partial pressure of carbon dioxide measurements
- Analyzing relationships between sea surface temperature and carbon dioxide levels
- Studying surface ocean biogeochemistry based on fluorescence data
- Correlating wind speed and direction with surface gas exchange rates
- Investigating regional variations in salinity across the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico
Strengths
- Data collected over a 10-month period from March to December 2002
- Includes multiple variable types: biological, chemical, meteorological, physical, and underway-surface
- Specific instruments listed: Carbon dioxide gas analyzer and Shower head chamber equilibrator
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
