Participatory environmental diagnosis and of health risks from the surrounding communities

An action research study diagnosed priority socio-environmental problems and health risks for communities surrounding the Petrochemical Complex of Rio de Janeiro. The participatory research applied interviews, focal groups, meetings, and workshops with social actors in Porto das Caixas and Sambaetiba districts from November 2013 to December 2014. The analysis, based on the Protocol for Assessing Community Excellence in Environmental Health, outlined cause-effect-intervention relationships for problems like water supply, sewage treatment, air pollution, and public security.
