Abdelbaset Elzagallaai from Western University conducted a pilot study investigating the pathogenesis of drug-induced serum sickness-like reactions (SSLRs). The research involved 19 patients and 19 healthy controls, using the lymphocyte toxicity assay (LTA) to evaluate the role of reactive drug metabolites. Results indicated a significant concentration-related increase in cell death in patient cells, suggesting bioactivation of the drug is a key step in β-lactam antibiotic-induced SSLRs.
