Description
Environment Agency polygon data contains the boundaries of landfill sites currently authorised under Environmental Permitting Regulations. The dataset can be filtered by specific waste descriptor codes, such as Co-Disposal Landfill or Inert Landfill. Sites are removed quarterly when licenses expire, are revoked, or surrendered, and authorisation details are retained on the Public Register for twelve months.
Use Cases
Mapping active landfill site locations based on polygon boundary data.
Analyzing waste type distribution using the provided descriptor code filters (e.g., A1 for Co-Disposal).
Monitoring regulatory status changes by tracking sites moved to the historic dataset quarterly.
Strengths
Includes a detailed classification system with at least 10 distinct waste descriptor codes.
Managed by the UK Environment Agency with a defined quarterly update cycle for site status.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
The description notes that an authorised site may not be actively accepting waste.
