Peru Subnational Rainfall Indicators and CHIRPS-GEFS Forecasts

Giving access to dekadal rainfall indicators for Peru's subnational administrative units, produced by the World Food Programme using CHIRPS satellite imagery and CHIRPS-GEFS forecasts. It tracks 10-day, 1-month, and 3-month precipitation totals alongside long-term averages and anomalies, with updates occurring up to six times per month. The data transitions from predictive forecasts to finalized observations to support continuous climate monitoring.

Use Cases

• Assessing agricultural risk by comparing current 1-month rainfall (r1h) against the long-term average (r1h_avg)
• Identifying regional precipitation deficits using the rainfall anomaly percentage (rfq) across Pcode units
• Short-term water resource planning using the 10-day rainfall forecast (rfh) filtered by the 'forecast' status in the type column

Strengths

• Includes 3-month rolling anomalies (r3q) for long-term climate trend monitoring
• Standardized Pcode references for all administrative units ensure geospatial interoperability
• Provides pixel counts (n_pixels) to indicate the spatial data density of each aggregate

Limitations

• Satellite-derived CHIRPS data may deviate from local rain gauge measurements in high-altitude Andean regions
• Recent records are subject to multiple revisions as forecasts are replaced by preliminary and then final observations
