The northern marine region of Australia, extending from the Torres Strait to the NT/WA state boundary, is assessed for petroleum resources. Geoscience Australia examined three geological provinces: the Timor Sea, Arafura Sea, and Gulf of Carpentaria. The assessment was undertaken to inform marine park planning by the Department of the Environment and Water Resources.
