Surveillance data contains reports of Salmonella and Shigella isolates from human sources across all U.S. states. The data is collected through the Public Health Laboratory Information System (PHLIS) by state health officials and reported to the CDC's Division of Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases. Duplicate records are deleted for annual summaries, and for Salmonella Typhi, only the first annual isolation per person is counted.
