Description
Seaglider SG037 collected temperature, salinity, and depth-averaged current data during a 162-day mission in the NW Atlantic from August 28, 2015, to February 6, 2016. The dataset, archived by NOAA NCEI, originates from an autonomous underwater vehicle developed by the University of Washington. Measurements were taken along a sawtooth trajectory through the water column.
Use Cases
Analyze vertical profiles of temperature and salinity to study water mass structure in the NW Atlantic.
Calculate depth-averaged currents from glider trajectory data to investigate ocean circulation patterns.
Model the relationship between sensor-derived physical properties and glider dive depth over the mission timeline.
Validate regional ocean models by comparing simulated temperature and salinity fields with the in-situ Seaglider observations.
Strengths
Data collection spans a continuous 162-day deployment period.
Measurements include multiple core oceanographic variables (temperature, salinity, currents).
Data is sourced from a scientifically established autonomous platform (Seaglider).
Limitations
The exact number of data rows and specific column schema are unknown.
Data is limited to a single glider (SG037) and a specific region (NW Atlantic/Bermuda).
The dataset is static, with no updates since the mission ended in early 2016.
Provenance
Source
NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI).
Collection Method
Collected by Seaglider SG037, an autonomous underwater vehicle, via in-situ sensors during pre-programmed dives.
Time Range
2015-08-28 to 2016-02 06
Freshness
Static dataset; mission concluded on 2016-02-06.
Geography
Northwest Atlantic Ocean, specifically the Bermuda/Hydrostation S/BATS region.
