Description
A 15-day deployment from October 3 to 17, 2016, captures physical oceanographic measurements from a Slocum glider in the shallow coastal waters of New Jersey. The dataset provides CTD (conductivity, temperature, depth) measurements of properties like temperature, salinity, conductivity, and density. Data were collected by Rutgers University's Center for Ocean Observing Leadership, processed by the IOOS National Glider Data Assembly Center, and archived by NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information.
Use Cases
Analyzing temperature and salinity profiles over the glider's trajectory to study water mass structure in the Mid-Atlantic Bight.
Modeling density variations derived from conductivity and temperature measurements to understand coastal stratification.
Mapping the glider's spatiotemporal path to correlate physical property changes with specific geographic locations and depths.
Assessing data quality and preparing for subsequent integration of dissolved oxygen and optical parameter measurements once available.
Strengths
Data covers a continuous 15-day time series from a specific glider deployment.
Measurements include core physical oceanographic properties (temperature, salinity, conductivity, density).
Data underwent quality checks and aggregation by the IOOS National Glider Data Assembly Center before archival.
Limitations
Dataset is currently limited to CTD measurements; promised oxygen and optical data are not yet included.
Spatial coverage is restricted to a single glider's trajectory in New Jersey coastal waters over two weeks.
Temporal coverage is from 2016, which may not reflect current oceanographic conditions.
