Description
PnET-BGC is an integrated biogeochemical model simulating chemical transformations in northern forest ecosystems on a monthly time step. It depicts processes including forest canopy element transformations, hydrology, soil organic matter dynamics, nitrogen cycling, geochemical weathering, and chemical equilibrium reactions. The model was evaluated against soil and stream data from the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, and can assess ecosystem responses to disturbances like clear-cutting, climatic events, and atmospheric deposition.
Use Cases
Simulating soil and stream water chemistry responses to atmospheric sulfur deposition based on integrated biogeochemical processes.
Evaluating the impact of forest clear-cutting disturbances on soil base saturation and stream acid neutralizing capacity.
Modeling nitrogen cycling and soil organic matter dynamics in northern hardwood forest ecosystems.
Assessing the sensitivity of model outputs to parameters like soil cation exchange capacity and carbon dioxide partial pressure.
Strengths
Model is based on peer-reviewed research published in Water Resources Research (Gbondo-Tugbawa et al., 2001).
Includes directions, executables, and procedures for reproducing published results.
Cross-platform presence on Data.gov and NASA EarthData indicates established scientific use.
Limitations
Key metadata such as row count, column names, and dataset size are unspecified across all sources.
Conflicting last updated dates: Data.gov lists 2026-04-09 (a future date suggesting placeholder metadata), while NASA EarthData lists 2001-12-31.
