Description
Northern Australian waters were surveyed aboard the RV Solander during four expeditions from 2009 to 2012. Sediment samples were collected, elutriated, and sorted, with all polychaete specimens identified by taxonomists Chris Glasby and Charlotte Watson to species or operational taxonomic unit level. Specimens are housed at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, and the dataset is published with permission from Geoscience Australia.
Use Cases
Analyzing species composition and richness in Northern Australian benthic habitats based on the survey expeditions mentioned.
Mapping the distribution of polychaete operational taxonomic units (OTUs) across the surveyed temporal range (2009-2012).
Validating taxonomic identifications by referencing the expert work of Chris Glasby and Charlotte Watson detailed in the description.
Studying temporal changes in marine polychaete communities across the four distinct survey periods.
Strengths
Taxonomic identifications were performed by named experts, Chris Glasby and Charlotte Watson.
Data covers four distinct survey voyages over a multi-year period (2009-2012).
Specimens are physically archived at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT), providing a verifiable reference collection.
Detailed survey methodology is documented in referenced Geoscience Australia reports (GA Records 2010/09, 2011/08, 2012/66, 2013/38).
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment for large-scale modeling.
Data may reflect geographic and temporal bias inherent to the specific survey voyages conducted.
