Description
Spatially continuous raster grids at 0.0025 decimal degree resolution predict the weight percentage of seabed gravel, mud, and sand in the Vlaming sub-basin within the Australian continental Exclusive Economic Zone. This dataset supersedes previous predictions with demonstrated improvements in accuracy, though accuracy varies with underlying sample density and seabed complexity. It was published by the Australian Ocean Data Network and last updated in April 2026.
Use Cases
Modeling benthic habitats based on predicted sediment composition.
Assessing seabed stability for infrastructure planning based on sediment type distribution.
Calibrating regional oceanographic models with seabed substrate data.
Planning future seabed sampling campaigns by identifying areas with insufficient data density.
Strengths
Provides three continuous sediment fraction predictions (gravel, mud, sand) at a 0.0025 decimal degree resolution.
Supersedes previous predictions for the basin with demonstrated improvements in accuracy.
Covers the Vlaming sub-basin within the Australian continental EEZ.
Limitations
Accuracy varies and artifacts occur in regions with insufficient underlying sample data.
Intended for basin-scale use and may not be appropriate for smaller-scale analysis in data-sparse areas.
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
