A 2026 study from the Australian Ocean Data Network compares 18 spatial interpolation methods for predicting seabed mud content. The research uses samples from Geoscience Australia's Marine Samples Database (MARS) across three regions of the Australian Exclusive Economic Zone. It finds that combinations of Random Forest with ordinary kriging or inverse distance squared reduce prediction error by up to 19%.
