Description
A first-iteration 3D geological model integrates interpretation of approximately 1,580 km of deep seismic reflection data, 40,000 line kilometres of AusAEM airborne electromagnetic data, and stratigraphic review of more than 800 legacy boreholes. Developed by Geoscience Australia as part of the Resourcing Australia’s Prosperity initiative, this basin-scale model provides a representation of stratigraphic architecture and basin geometry. The associated data package includes 22 regional stratigraphic surfaces, 29 isochore grids, 16 median Vshale maps, and 20 confidence maps.
Use Cases
Assess groundwater resource distribution and aquifer connectivity based on the 3D representation of stratigraphic architecture.
Support mineral and energy exploration targeting based on the basin-scale model of stacked Neoproterozoic to Early Cretaceous sequences.
Conduct land-use decision-making and environmental impact assessments based on the model of aquifer distribution and groundwater flow domains.
Incorporate regional stratigraphic surfaces and isochore grids into national geological datasets for continental-scale analysis.
Strengths
Integrates multiple large-scale geophysical datasets, including ~1,580 km of seismic and 40,000 line-km of AEM data.
Stratigraphic review incorporates data from more than 800 legacy boreholes.
Data package includes 22 surfaces, 29 isochore grids, 16 Vshale maps, and 20 confidence maps.
Limitations
Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download.
Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment.
Data may reflect geographic bias inherent to the remote and partly underexplored Canning Basin region.
