Australia's east coast north of Bass Strait has been very sparsely explored for petroleum, with much of the geology virtually unknown. This report from the Australian Ocean Data Network provides a preliminary assessment of petroleum potential from New South Wales/Victoria border to the southern boundary of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. It identifies at least four sedimentary basins, including the Sydney and Maryborough Basins, and discusses possible offshore extensions of others.
Petroleum exploration is prohibited within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and no assessment of this area is included.
