April/May 1988, the BMR research vessel 'Rig Seismic' conducted a 21-day geochemical program in the Otway and Gippsland Basins. Light hydrocarbon gases (C1-C6) were measured in sediments at 342 locations on the continental shelf and upper slope. Thermogenic hydrocarbons were identified in near-surface sediments at forty-two locations.
Use Cases
- Identify thermogenic hydrocarbon sources based on sediment gas measurements
- Analyze hydrocarbon source type and maturity based on wet gas content ratios
- Model hydrocarbon migration pathways based on gas concentration and faulting patterns
- Integrate geochemical data with thermal maturation modeling to locate principal source rocks
Strengths
- Data collected from 342 specific sampling locations
- Results differentiate findings between the Otway (17 days) and Gippsland (4 days) Basins
- Analysis includes specific sub-regions: Crayfish Platform, Mussel Platform, and Voluta Trough
Limitations
- Column-level documentation is absent; field semantics must be inferred after download
- Row count is unknown, which may limit suitability assessment
- Freshness should be verified; last metadata update was 2026-06-04
