Description
UNEP-WCMC produces this geospatial dataset of marine and terrestrial protected areas and Other Effective Area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) in Finland. Updated monthly as part of the Protected Planet Initiative, it serves as the official source for tracking progress toward the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. The data is provided in multiple formats including GEOJSON, GEOPACKAGE, and CSV.
Use Cases
Spatial overlap analysis using GEOJSON boundaries to identify biodiversity risks in project planning
Calculating total conserved surface area in Finland to track Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework Target 3
Integration into monitoring systems like Global Forest Watch to track land-use changes within protected boundaries
Strengths
Monthly update frequency ensures high temporal accuracy
Includes both WDPA and WD-OECM conservation categories
Available in four formats including GEOPACKAGE and GEOSERVICE for GIS integration
Limitations
Data accuracy is dependent on the quality of reporting from national Finnish stakeholders to UNEP-WCMC
Specific attribute column names are not defined in the source metadata
